Standing on top of a mountain in the Cape Breton Highlands, wearing three-inch silver stilettos and a long white gown, the wind in my hair, I felt radiant. Clear blue sky above, sparkling sea below and rolling hills of green surrounded us. “This is a magical place,” said a middle-aged woman sitting on a bench near me, and in that moment I believed her.
To tourists, Loch Ken is a sliver of water, 16 km long, running through some of the finest scenery Dumfries and Galloway in the Scottish Lowlands has to offer. For locals, it is an area known for great sailing and fishing. It was the home of the largest pike ever caught — a whopping 72 lbs and over 7 feet in length, reeled in by the local gameskeeper in the 18th century. But the great success story is that in the skies above the loch, the Red Kites have returned.
