Liz Carroll (fiddle) and John Doyle (guitar, bouzouki, mandola, vocals) form a mighty duo. Liz Carroll is a virtuoso Irish fiddler and teaming up with the many voices that John Doyle brings to stringed instruments, especially the guitar, results in true genius on this CD Double Play. Quite a few of the tunes are compositions of Carroll and Doyle, which shows their respect for maintaining and enhancing a tradition. It’s not hard to understand why Liz Carroll won the All-Ireland Senior fiddle title at only eighteen years of age. Her use of double stops, harmonies, deft left hand ornamentation and exemplary bowing produce a sound that is original. You know you are hearing Irish music played at a high level, but it is friendly and welcoming to the listener. I saw John Doyle for the first time at Celtic Colours Festival and was amazed at his guitar dexterity as he played bass, rhythm and lead at the same time. Also a fine singer, Doyle’s version of “A Pound a Week Rise”, a song for the English and Scottish coal miners on strike in 1984, is stirring. These musicians play so well together you’d think they grew up in the same house with the fiddle and guitar never out of reach. Double Play was produced by John Doyle and Liz Carroll. They are joined by Kenny Malone on percussion and John R. Burr on organ. Brilliant CD.
