Absolutely Irish is a recording of a concert put together by musician and producer Mick Moloney and filmmaker Paul Wagner. It played at New York’s Irish Arts Centre in 2007 and was filmed for American Public Television. I was fortunate to catch the show on WGBH and can assure you this is not one of those sugar-laden, so-called Celtic spectacles such as Celtic Thunder or Celtic Woman (my opinion). Absolutely Irish is good. Close to the floor music performed by eighteen top notch Irish American musicians, singers and dancers.

There are tunes, song and dancing, all done with the utmost of skill. Each performer’s love of traditional music shines through in the many and varied selections. With such a large cast it would take too much space to focus on each performance, but a few of the highlights for me include the humorous song “McNally’s Row of Flats” by Mick Moloney and the Scottish song, “The King’s Shilling” by Karan Casey and John Doyle. The fiddle extravaganza featuring Athena Tergis, Eileen Ivers and the incomparable Liz Carroll will bring you to the edge of your seat.

Mick Moloney produced this show and the fans of Irish music in America anxiously await another.
